Co-Authored
Co-Authored is a collection of abstract photographs created during my experimentation with artistic appropriation. Rooted in my discomfort with the practice, I embarked on pilgrimages to photograph artworks by some of the world's most beloved artists.
This journey took me to inspiring museums across the United States and Europe, where I combined long shutter speeds and handheld movement to create new artistic works that are unique but remain in conversation with the original pieces.
Through careful attention to detail, light, color, and form, I isolate fragments and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, transforming paintings, sculptures, and installations into independent visual compositions. The result is a mysterious and alluring collection of abstract photographs that are playful and fun, yet sophisticated and elegant.
Each photograph is titled using "after"—a centuries-old art historical convention that acknowledges the original artist's composition while distinguishing my interpretive work from the source. This practice, which has its roots in traditional artistic training where students and masters alike would copy and learn from established works, ensures proper attribution and situates my photographs within a larger conversation about artistic lineage and influence.
In respect of the artists whose work inspired my own, the project itself is titled Co-Authored to ensure that we share credit—investigating the collaborative nature of viewing art, where each encounter between viewer and artwork generates something new, and meaning is made together rather than simply received.
