The 100 Day Project #35

Detifoss Cotton

The 100 Day Project, Day 35

I'm on the hunt for moments of joy. The last few years have been full of transition, caring for parents, and trying to survive the chaos of the world — so when I find little pockets of delight I soak them up. Finding these fluffy, bright flowers was one of those moments. Known as fífa in Icelandic — cotton grass in English — they charmed me immediately.

Fifa grows in the wetlands of northeastern Iceland. I photographed them paces away from Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Dr. Seuss could not have dreamed them up better.

I love traveling with my camera. I got out of the habit for a while when cell phone cameras advanced enough to met my expectations, but I now travel with a mix — my DSLR, my medium format Yashica, or my retro Kodak 110 film camera (yes, they make film for 110 cameras again!). Capturing a moment on film is just different. I feel more rooted in time when I'm photographing with film.

A small update on my printing practice: I've had to temporarily slow my daily printing while waiting for a maintenance cleaning cartridge for my new Canon printer to arrive. The part is on backorder nearly everywhere, naturally. But like any photographer worth their salt, I can pivot. I have a fun idea brewing to stay on target for The 100 Day Project. More soon.

About the 100 Day Project: A global creative challenge where thousands of artists share a piece of their practice every single day for 100 days. I'm joining creatives around the world, and I'm excited to bring you along. Each day I'll be sharing one of my photos — some recent, some old, and some from my current project — along with the story behind it: where I was, who I was with, and why I love it.
