The 100 Day Project, Day 55

As soon as we could after the pandemic, Mike and I took a long trip, three weeks across the western U.S., stopping in Tucson, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Hawaii to visit family and friends. We called it our "Hugs and Hikes" tour.

Mike and I are walkers. On vacation we almost always choose to walk (or take trains). Walking is how we get to know a place — the neighborhoods, cafes, mom-and-pop restaurants. In Honolulu we walked eight miles round trip from our hotel in Waikiki to a beloved hot dog stand across town. We visit every time we’re in Hawaii, and every time it is worth every step.

On our walk we came upon a vintage VW van fully converted into a camper at the popular Ala Moana Regional Park. Two bikes in bright beachy pastels parked out front, a pair of flip flops nearby. Whether it was someone's home or a rental I couldn't tell you. It was a delightful find either way.

Ala Moana is the kind of park that shows you how people actually live in a place. All-day barbecues, large family gatherings, children everywhere. The real Hawaii, happening just down the road from the bustle of touristy Waikiki.
