I love winter. I love the cold, the snow, the way a landscape transforms overnight into something entirely new. Western New York winters are long and gray and demanding — but they are also, if you pay attention, extraordinarily beautiful.

This photograph was made on a January morning in 2022, just outside our home here in Rochester. Mike and I were heading out for the day when I noticed the frost on our garage door. The early morning sun backlit it perfectly, the house still in shadow behind it, and the patterns the frost had made overnight were so intricate and precise.

I have been selecting one photograph each year as our holiday card for nearly many years. This was our card for 2022. I received more compliments on it than almost any card I can remember sending. This is what I love most about photography. The extraordinary has a way of showing up in the most unremarkable places, if you keep your eyes open and your camera close.
