The 100 Day Project, Day 2
Today I introduce you to Kristin.
Teacher. Advocate. Convener. Elegant comedienne. Truth teller.
I married into a Friend Family full of truly phenomenal human beings who share their complicated and beautiful lives with me. My love runs deep for each of them — my respect even deeper.
This past year I turned 50, and something quietly shifted within me. I realized I likely have more days behind me than ahead, and that realization lit a fire that had been dormant for a long while. It energized me in ways I didn't expect.
It also clarified something. After several years supporting my husband and his family through the advancing memory loss affecting my father-in-law, I made the decision to start photographing the key people in my life whenever we're together. My thinking is simple: if my own memory fails me someday, I feel certain that my photographs will be what calms me and reconnects me to the life I lived.
This past summer, many members of our Friend Family gathered for a few glorious days at the family compound of a dear friend on the island of Vinalhaven, off the central coast of Maine. An hour-long ferry ride from the mainland, Vinalhaven is a magical place — unhurried and deeply quiet, the kind of place that loosens something in your chest you didn't know was tight.
It is an honor to witness the passage of time with Kristin in my life. Her wisdom, curiosity, and mirth are among the many traits I treasure in her.
About the 100 Day Project: A global creative challenge where thousands of artists share a piece of their practice every single day for 100 days. I'm joining creatives around the world, and I'm excited to bring you along. Each day I'll be sharing one of my photos — some recent, some old, and some from my current project — along with the story behind it: where I was, who I was with, and why I love it.
