The 100 Day Project #27

Summer Rain

The 100 Day Project, Day 27

I have been noticing that my practice is gravitating toward images like this one. Quiet. Intimate. Still. It’s a reflection of the calm I seek and try to create in my life, after years of transition after transition.

Western New York winters are not for the faint of heart. This one has been long, gray, cold, and dark. I have learned to lean into the introspection they invite, to find something useful in the stillness. It makes the arrival of spring ever more anticipated.

I made this photograph last summer on the island of Vinalhaven, off the coast of Maine — the same trip where I made the portrait of Kristin (Day #2). Vinalhaven is a place I adore. An hour ferry ride from the mainland, it is where I can hit the pause button on life. To slow my days down to the pace of wildlife and weather. To watch the light change across the water and the clouds move through without agenda. To be with my Friend Family, making communal dinners, music after dinner, .

What I love about it is what the screen does to the raindrops — catching each one and turning the whole image into tiny pixels. An analog version of the digital images that I capture.

About the 100 Day Project: A global creative challenge where thousands of artists share a piece of their practice every single day for 100 days. I'm joining creatives around the world, and I'm excited to bring you along. Each day I'll be sharing one of my photos — some recent, some old, and some from my current project — along with the story behind it: where I was, who I was with, and why I love it.
