The 100 Day Project, Day 16
In life you meet people who fill your heart with joy. Bruce is that person for me.
When I made this photo it was the first time I had seen him in over two years. He had just traveled 24+ hours straight from Ghana to get to my 50th birthday party in the Hudson Valley last summer. It may have been my birthday party, but it was Bruce's show — and it delighted me to no end to witness it.
Bruce and my husband sang together in an a cappella men's group back in Tucson, where they were locally famous. He is a truly phenomenal human being. We share a deep curiosity about the people and places we find ourselves in. He has one of those deep, melodic voices, and listening to him tell his stories will keep you enthralled for hours.
For the past three years Bruce has been in Ghana, teaching math to kids as a Peace Corps volunteer. Before that he spent decades as a beloved math professor at the University of Arizona. He has been on a bit of a world tour since retirement, so I see him less these days — but now I have this photograph of him. It captures the mirth, contentment, and deep intelligence that I see every time I'm lucky enough to be in his company.
This week, Bruce became a grandfather for the first time. Please join me in congratulating him.
About the 100 Day Project: A global creative challenge where thousands of artists share a piece of their practice every single day for 100 days. I'm joining creatives around the world, and I'm excited to bring you along. Each day I'll be sharing one of my photos — some recent, some old, and some from my current project — along with the story behind it: where I was, who I was with, and why I love it.
